Apparatus

Reflux apparatus

A reflux setup heats a reaction at the boiling point of the solvent for a long time.

Simple distillation

Simple distillation separates liquids with widely different boiling points and purifies solvents.

Vacuum distillation

Vacuum distillation lowers the pressure so that high-boiling or heat-sensitive compounds distill at a lower temperature.

Dean–Stark apparatus

A Dean–Stark trap removes water by azeotropic distillation to drive equilibrium reactions such as esterification and acetal formation.

Addition and Grignard setup

This setup is for moisture-sensitive reactions such as the Grignard reaction, where a reagent is added slowly while the temperature is watched.

Schlenk line

A Schlenk line handles air- and moisture-sensitive reagents.

Workup and purification

A single diagram of the steps from reaction workup (extraction, drying, filtration, evaporation) to purification (TLC, column).

Suction filtration

Suction filtration separates a solid from a liquid quickly.

Structures and reaction schemes (Pro)

Examples of structures and reaction schemes. These figures are free to use like the apparatus diagrams. Drawing structures and schemes in the app is a Pro feature (US$3.99/month with the first month free, or US$39.99 once).

Reaction mechanism (SN2)

Hydroxide attacks the carbon of (R)-2-bromobutane from the side opposite the bromine, and the configuration inverts to give (S)-2-butanol.

Complex structures (natural products)

Even densely fused natural products such as strychnine, morphine and paclitaxel can be called up by name or SMILES, complete with stereochemistry.

Writing reaction schemes

Nitration, a Grignard reaction, an esterification equilibrium and a lithiation–carboxylation, each with reagents above the arrow and conditions below.

Apparatus and scheme together

A Dean–Stark apparatus and the esterification equilibrium of acetic acid and isoamyl alcohol on one figure.

Draw this in the app

This diagram was drawn in FlaskConnect. Pick the glassware and it connects itself, coolant lines and all, in a few minutes. Apparatus drawing and export (SVG, PNG, PowerPoint, Word, Excel) are free.
